Renewables

Utility-scale solar PV, onshore wind and RE-hybrid plants — complete electrical engineering from collector system design through grid compliance and energisation.

Sector overview

Engineering the energy transition at utility scale

DD Powertech delivers power system studies and detailed electrical engineering for solar PV plants, onshore wind farms and RE-hybrid projects that combine solar, wind and battery storage.

Our team covers the full electrical scope — collector system design, pooling substation engineering, earthing, protection, grid-code compliance studies and commissioning support — keeping the entire design under one accountable team.

In detail

What this sector involves

A utility-scale renewable plant goes through a chain of electrical decisions before a single panel or turbine is energised. The collector network must carry the generation profile efficiently, the pooling substation must meet the utility's specification, and the plant must prove it can support the grid during disturbances.

On the compliance side, CEA connectivity standards and central and state transmission utility requirements specify voltage ride-through, reactive power, frequency response, power quality and protection performance — and each needs accepted studies before energisation is approved.

DD Powertech works across this chain — from connection feasibility and key SLDs to detailed drawings, ETAP and PSCAD studies and relay setting sheets for commissioning.

Engineering scope

What DD Powertech delivers for renewables

01

Collector system design

MV and HV collector networks for solar, wind and hybrid sites — cable sizing, routing, feeder topology, losses and protection, sized for the real generation profile rather than a peak-only assumption.

02

Pooling substation engineering

Pooling substations at 33, 66, 132, 220 and 400 kV — SLDs, layouts, protection, earthing, cable engineering and civil interfaces from concept to IFC.

03

Grid compliance studies

Load flow, short circuit, reactive capability, ride-through, harmonics and power quality to CEA and CTU/STU requirements — structured for connection approval.

04

Earthing & lightning protection

Earthing for large-area plants and pooling substations, plus IEC 62305 lightning protection for arrays, inverter stations and control buildings.

Specialist studies

Studies that unlock grid connection

01

PSCAD & EMT studies

Inverter-level EMT models in PSCAD for LVRT, HVRT, frequency response and control interaction — often the critical-path item for connection approval.

02

Protection & relay coordination

Coordination from the grid interface down to the inverter transformers, including transformer differential and feeder protection, with commissioning-ready setting sheets.

03

BESS integration

Studies and electrical design for battery storage co-located with solar or wind, operating as one generating unit at the point of connection.

04

Reactive power & voltage

Reactive capability assessment, compensation sizing and voltage-profile optimisation where the network operator specifies tight power factor and voltage bands.

FAQ

Renewables — what clients ask us

Which studies are needed to connect a solar or wind plant in India?

Typically load flow, short circuit, reactive power capability, LVRT/HVRT, frequency response and harmonic studies to CEA connectivity standards and the CTU or STU requirements. Larger plants increasingly also need validated PSCAD models.

Can you design both the collector system and the pooling substation?

Yes. Designing them together means cable sizes, transformer ratings, reactive compensation and protection are consistent from the inverter to the grid.

Do you support hybrid and storage-backed plants?

Yes. We study and design solar-wind hybrids and plants with co-located BESS, including the combined plant's reactive capability and protection.

Do you work with inverter OEM models?

Yes. We integrate OEM-supplied inverter and plant-controller models into PSCAD, PSS/E and PowerFactory, and validate them against grid-code test cases.
